Durateq® ATV Provides All Visitors Access to the History of the Pecos Ruins

February 10, 2016 — Houston, TX — Pecos National Historic Park, site of one of the most powerful of the Northern New Mexico pueblos, and Softeq, a seasoned provider of embedded software solutions and full-stack development services for connected objects, announce the completion of the DURATEQ® assistive technology system installation on the grounds of Pecos National Historical Park.

The implementation of the Durateq® assistive technology solution allows visitors to follow a self-guided tour of wayside exhibits through the 1.25 mile trail of what was once the largest Indian pueblo in the Southwest and helps tell part of the story of the Spanish exploration of America. As the visitor winds through the ruins of the Pecos Pueblo and the mission church, the GPS signals trigger the content on the Durateq handheld for each stop. The Softeq’s team ensured the assistive device usage remains intuitive even at the stops where their close location did not allow accurate individual triggering. This challenge was resolved through audio menus to allow selection of content under a main introduction triggered when the user arrives at the stop.

Originally developed for the Walt Disney World theme park, the Durateq Assistive Technology handheld devices featuring SyncLink^TM Technology and its ALiCE (Assistive Listening and Captioning Engine) software makes the visitor experience accessible to anyone requiring audio or visual assistance. The system provides audio description (AD) for visitors who are blind or have low vision, and assistive listening (ALS) for visitors with hearing loss. The final hardware installation package at Pecos National Historical Park included DURATEQ® handhelds with GPS modules and ALiCE software inside, headphones, break-away neck lanyards, and a single-unit charging dock.

The site of the Pecos National Historical Park, located in San Miguel County, near Pecos, New Mexico was originally designated Pecos National Monument on June 28, 1965. In 1990, with the acquisition of the Forked Lightning Ranch and Glorieta battlefield units, the official designation was changed to Pecos National Historic Park which includes the Pecos Pueblo, a National Historic Landmark.
